We encourage interest from the public, and non-members are welcome to attend a meeting. The MST is always seeking new members – please contact us with any questions. AMS member contributions provide the support necessary to do this DNA sequencing to find out if the fungi here are similar to those in other areas or if they are unique to Arizona or our region.

If you missed your opportunity to attend in 2023, have no fear; because it was such a great time last year, Vint has decided to host the 2024 Ohio Mushroom Festival on September 12-15th. The festival has also been expanded to include a Morel Foray on May 4th. This year’s festival will be held at Joe Bottoms Campground, in Hammondsville, Ohio.

The Sonoma County Mycological Association (SOMA) is a non-profit group dedicated to learning about local mushrooms, and educating the public about the vast and diverse world of fungi. Frequent mention is made of Michael Kuo’s website MushroomObserver.com and of a “forthcoming” book on morels by him, “due October 2005”. Is still a vital website, actively updated, one of the most useful for learning about mushrooms in general and morels specifically. His book, Morels (2005), is fun and informative and should be required reading for would-be morel hunters.
Cryptica; the two species cannot be separated by eye, but both are choice edibles. Diminutiva is a small light-colored morel, rare in my experience. Tomentosa are known from other areas, but might possibly be found in Ohio.

While many folks have dreamed of a locally grown mycofest, the Ohio Mushroom Festival was Vint’s brainchild. He carefully assembled the team of forays leaders, identifiers, presenters, vendors, and volunteers to ensure that all fungus fanatics were represented. I didn’t have the heart to harvest the mushrooms and thus deprive other users of the trail of seeing and photographing such natural beauty – so I left them untouched and prepared to return home empty handed. At this time, your hard-working OMS volunteers have not made incorporation as a 501.c.3 organization a priority due to the amount of paperwork entailed. We are an organization that encourages the research, education, cultivation, hunting, identification and the cooking of mushrooms. With over 2,400 members, PSMS is one of the largest mycological societies in the country.

When conditions are right, I’ve harvested Golden Oysters from the same logs in May, June, July, and September. My preferred way to serve the tasty mushroom is simply sauteed aside seafood or pork tenderloin to avoid overpowering the delicious mild taste. Each evening concluded with performances from multiple musical acts, which kept the crowd grooving until bedtime… though not late enough to interfere with the following morning’s forays. Saturday evening, however, was punctuated by both the lyrical freestyling of Fungi Flows and the burning of the Amanita mushrooms! The flaming fungi were set up in front of a large rock cliff face, creating a lovely illuminated stone backdrop for the festival goers.

For instance, the CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange) added digital currencies to its traditional futures markets this year. However, the festival was well organized and ran quite smoothly overall, and guest feedback was impressively positive, which was reflective of the dedicated efforts of the volunteer staff. Spread like wildfire, this fungus is now well established here in Knox County. Barely a few yards from the trailhead, I encountered the first clusters fruiting from tree trunks and logs but, sadly, they were no longer photogenic crypto trading review and too old for my skillet. More than a mile and a half later, I found my nature buddy’s stump with gorgeous Golden Oysters surrounded by Great Waterleaf plants in full bloom. When I first encountered the Golden Oyster Mushrooms (Pleutorus citrinopileatus) in my neck of the woods in Knox County in June 2020, it was a mystery mushroom that I was unable to identify using my Ohio reference books.
